possible thought

ok i was reading act 3 sc 1 today and it hit me... is it possible that Hamlet doesn't act crazy in front of someone and they let the word back to claudius? wouldn't that kill any hope in the success of his plan?

ok to continue my last idea, to make it clearer, do you think that Hamlet could possibly have mixed up who he acts crazy to and who he is sane with? that sounds like something from a movie where he is different to everyone and loses track at the end. does anyone understand what i'm saying?

Well, that could happen. But the point of the whole entire play is for Hamlet to follow through with the ghosts plan, or at least try. Hamlet knows what he's doing and he has planned it all out. I'm pretty sure he knows who to be sane with and who to act crazy around. The reason Shakespeare wrote the play was probably not so that we could see Hamlet mess up. Plus, so far, he hasn't really acted sane to anyone. Except for when he gave the hint to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to try to get them to notice it was an act. There's a reason they didn't get it. Because no one is supposed to find out that Hamlet is faking crazy.

I agree with Megan’s statement. I think that Hamlet definitely knows which characters he's going to act crazy around and those he's going to act sane around. I understand how it could be confusing because it seems like he never gives anyone the same impression of his mental state. This is probably a part of his disposition, either that or his true bipolar nature showing through. Either way, in response to Dan’s question I think Hamlet acts just as he means to, it's all apart of his plan.

I believe that it is quite possible that he could get "caught up in the act" and he could act crazy towards someone he isn't supposed to, but by now everyone thinks he has gone insane, so I don't think it would really make a significant difference one way or another.

Hamlet isn't afraid that anyone is going to go back and tell Claudious that he is not acting crazy becasue he knows who he doesn't have to act crazy around he knows who is on his side at the present time. This is why at some point in the play Hamlet will tell Ophelia certain things becasue Hamlet knows that she will relay his message to Polonious.
