I find that I like this poem a lot better than To His Coy Mistress because I think it makes more sense and is different from the previous ones we have read that have been about love and sex and men trying to have sex which gets pretty old when reading about it during the sixteen hundreds. I think this poem makes sense becuase it's easy to understand how these sailors have just survied some sort of unexpected event and they are praising God and his will to make sure they get through it. They thank him for providing them with furit and shelter and an island to live on and for making the fruit taste so good and for providing the seas that give them life. They hope that their song reaches God's ear's and is then echoed throughout the sea for all to hear and gain inpiration and faith in God. I think that this makes sense to the reader and delivers the messge in a creative way by placing it in a song and giving a story to give the reader some context as to who and why the song is being sung. It is inspriring and could give people hope who have not only been shipwrecked but to anyone who has been in dark time and can't find a way out of it.

Yes this poem was a lot easier to understan than all the rest, I actually was able to get the gist of it w/out having to read it 12x over. However there was one part in lines 13-16 when he said "he gave us eternal spring, which here enamels every thing, and sends the fowls to us in care, on daily visits through the air" i have no clue what that means does anyone have any insight?
In my class we took the poem to be about how the Puritains went around trying to claim new colonies and how Bermuda was a parallel to the garden of eden. And how they were starting over a new world of Puritain rule in one of the most perfect places on earth so they would be closer to God. The enamel line is saying that everything is covered in this kind of shine like enamel paint so its saying its like perfect and beautiful.

after disscussing this poem more indepth in class i realized that I didn't make the connection that these sailors were adventurers seeking new land in the new world. It makes sense know that they see this new land a heaven on earth or the garden of eden. It must of been amzing for them to see this oasis that they had found that looked so much different than anything they had ever seen in London or England. I agree with Caroline that everything looked new and plentiful. I still find this poem to be very interseting becuase while the author wasn't actually there to experince we can make a safe bet that these recounts and reactions, most importantly, were correct. This poem shows how important it was for this explorers to find a new land that they could escape the tyranny and make start a new prosperous life.
Marvell, born the son of an Anglican clergyman obviously later supported Puritanism. This may easily be seen in "Bermudas" with his great outlook for the Puritan
emigrants. It is interesting how his background with Cromwell influenced much of this writing and that he Helped Milton and
was later even a Member of Parliament. It seems as if his poetry helped him understand how much these ideas meant to him. He not only wanted to express himself there but everywhere, which may make him a good poet, that he has this type of passion.
