Sonnet 14

Thought it was interesting when reading the sonnet that the speaker praises God at both the beginning and end of the poem. The idea of God brought up with 3 person (father, son, holy-spirit) shows Donne's traditional orthodox approach to his writing. These sonnets allow us to see Donne's ideas toward religion. Lastly would like to note the metaphors in Sonnet 14; him(his heart) compared to a town, and him being maiden to God's enemy.

These are obviously religious poems, but I don’t get why there is so much violence in the metaphors he uses, I guess he’s trying to show he’s devotion to God, but this poem sort of depicts God as a violent force, shouldn’t the tone be more calm then violent when speaking about religion?

I don't really believe Donne is trying to show God as a figure of violence. Through the metaphors he uses I believe Donne is trying to show no more then God just being a powerful being. Donne is trying to show that God has the power to do as he chooses, my take on it because I can't see Donne, a man devoted to religion, talk about God in a bad way.

I think taht donne is trying to portray God's power as being almighty and something that one should fear. No one should test God in his strength because he can do all things. I agree with Vin that this poem doeas certainly allow us to further look into Donne's religous beliefs. I can see that Donne took his reliigion very seriously. I thinkthat the person who is talking in this poem is a reflection of himself and his personal sturggle with his faith in God. Having converted religions I can udnerstand that Donne would be questionable about his new fatih and how he is supposed to interpret the bible differently. Overall I think this peom is very thought provoking about one's religion.

I think Donne doesn't mess around with religion at all. He takes it very seriously and lives his life by it...and tries to influence other people by it. I am not sure however, if i agree with the fact that hes not putting god out to be a violent force...it seems as though hes trying to get you to fear god and obey him
