this new reading doesn't seem to bad i think how he is starting out each paragraph in a really factual way and then transitions into a more personal side of the character. I start to get an idea that the more discription of the character the more important they will be. but is this a prereading to the book or is this just taken from the book?

I'm not really sure zach. I was sort of curious about that myself. I too like this reading this alot, more so than anything we have done so far. The whole sidetracking bit O'Brien does is a bit random at times in my opinion. For example when Cross looks into the tunnel on one sentence, but in the very next one he starts talking about Martha again. It seems like O'Brien might be dozing off, and not the character. I don't know if this is supposed to be intentional, but it is definately different
admittadly i had not finished the reading beofre i posted that so i have to take some of it back. The tunnel sceen i think has alot of importance. It is at that point that Cross is showing how he is becoming so distracted by martha. The tunnel is so horifying that no one but no one will do it willingly they have to pick numbers and when they come out they joke that he is a zombie. the tunnel is a horifying place and Cross should be totally focused on it but he still thinks about Martha, hes hooked on her.
I have to say that I was pretty surprised that I actually liked this reading. Especially since everything else we have read so far hasn't really appealed to my interests.
My take on the whole tunnel scene was that O’Brien was merely using this as another illustration of the burdens that Cross carries. Cross has more on his mind than he can carry and that is why he continually "zones out"
I agree with Sean. I was really surprised that this reading appealed to me. None of the other readings so far have really struck me as interesting or attractive, but this one was by far the best. I liked all the description that O'Brien adds. It makes you feel like you are carrying the actual item with its weight on your shoulders. I also agree with Sean about the tunnel scene, however, I believe that the tunnel represents all of Cross's thoughts "caving in" around him and making him feel helpless and trapped. All in all, I enjoyed this reading thoroughly.
